I have a 4 year old son who has recently been very into understanding the details of everything he can think to ask about. One of his favorite topics currently has been seasons. As the days became warmer this past spring he would ask me on a daily basis wither or not it was summer and we wound up in a lengthy discussion about how how it felt like summer because we could wear shorts and school had ended, but that the season of summer hadn’t officially started and wouldn’t until June 21st.
It is a lot for a 4 year old brain to process. I was thinking that it might make for a fun scrapbooking layout topic. Today I’d like to share three types of inspiration to help you tell your summertime stories.
|| SUMMER JOURNALING PROMPTS ||
INTERVIEW YOUR CHILDREN | Childhood offers such a distinct division between summer and the rest of the year. So let your children tell their summer stories.
- What is your favorite thing that we did this summer?
- What do you still want to do this summer?
- What is the best thing about summer?
- What is the worst thing about summer?
- Do you like to sleep in? Why?
- What makes summer different from the rest of the year?
- Would you like summer to last all year long? Why?
TALK ABOUT THE DAY-TO-DAY | So many times we scrap the big moments and forget the little ones but summer can be full of those wonderful everyday joys.
- What’st he first thing you do in the morning during the summer?
- Where is your favorite place to hang out in the summer? Why?
- What books did you read this summer?
- What is your “song of the summer”?
- What effect does the longer days have on your life?
- Changes in your daily schedule over the summer.
- Who did we get to connect with or visit over the summer?
- Today the weather is….
THE BIG EVENTS | Summer is often the time for trips, vacations, and family gatherings.
- Why did you choose this vacation?
- What would you do differently next time?
- Get the perspective on the same event from different family members or friends.
- Your favorite food memory from a trip?
- What made the vacation so worth it?
- Was the event stressful or relaxing? How did it make you feel?
- Talk about the details of how you planned the trip or how you traveled to a location.

I went through some recent layouts made by the One Little Bird team and the Lilypad Pollywogs. Check out the fun summer inspiration I found.
Obsessed with Sharks | by Kelleanne
This one jumped out at me because summer is a time of reading, especially for my oldest. We are just starting our summer reading program at our library.

Summer for our family means that the weather is such that the kids can spend tons of time outside. I loved the beautiful outdoor pictures that share a story in this layout.
Just a Little Note | by suefalstaff
What would summer be without water fun. In fact I just filled up a water table outside for my kiddos so they could play while I type this post!

Barefeet and running around outside just screams summer doesn’t it?!

Of course if you don’t have children your running around barefoot summer companion may be of a different sort.

|| PRODUCT SUGGESTIONS ||
I also took a stroll through the One Little Bird shop and put together some of my favorite products for recording summer memories.
Catch some rays and enjoy a little leisure time. Suncatcher has matching papers too.
Going Places – whether it’s the vacation of a life time to Paris or a stroll through the woods next door.
Spend some time teaching your little one to ride a bike or bike together as a family.
Carson Park is full of all-around summer goodness, and the color palette makes it great for patriotic celebrations as well!
Ah summer! Make sure to take pictures of it all and have fun scrapping all of your memories.
It’s always so much fun perusing through the One Little Bird gallery. I am always amazed by the abundance of talent showcased there. Here are a few layouts that I hope you love as much as I do.
WELCOME SUMMER | by lcpereyra
I just love this series of photos, the bright yellow background, the awesome journaling and title, the doodled borders. All in all just a fabulous, cheerful, layout.
WHEN NALA MET DAISY | by bjc
This woodgrain background works so well with this photo. The first thing I noticed was the bright green grass and awesome photo crop. I adore this beautiful, simple, layout.
THIS IS MORNING | by mollyc
I love this little capture of everyday life. The focus is on the photo and paired with the title a wonderful story is told.

Another great layout with a snippet of everyday life. I love how she captured her son’s TV viewing habits here on this fun page.
Thanks for the inspiration this month everyone! If you’d like to see your layout featured here on the blog, make sure you are posting them in the One Little Bird gallery.
For the month of August I’m featuring an oldie but goodie, Retrospective – which means for the entire month you can grab this gem for 30% off in my store. I love photography kits, they’re probably my favorite to design and my favorite to use – because it all starts with photos, right? I have to restrain myself from turning every kit into a photography kit.
The coordinating 3×4 journaling cards are also on sale this month. I feel as though this kit needs another set of cards, so I’ve added it to my list of things to do this week.

I’m excited to share that I’ll be guesting at Scrap Orchard for the month of August and even more excited to share two new releases that are now available in my Scrap Orchard shop – my Forever Young Digital Kit and the coordinating Forever Young Journal Cards. You’ll find both of them on sale for the first week of their release, and if you buy the kit you’ll get the Journaling Cards free during this period as well.
This collection’s color scheme and contemporary patterns make it perfect for almost any page – it’s a kit for both the young and the young at heart. I absolutely loved working with these colors! The combination of pink, green, yellow and navy is so fresh and classic. You’ll reach for this again and again for everyday moments that have you asking “Where’s the pause button?”
The coordinating 3×4 journaling cards are great for pocket albums, hybrid projects and digital scrapbooking pages. This package contains the individual PNG files for each card as well as 8×11.5″ printable sheets containing all 6 cards – these sheets are a dream for at-home printing, especially the PDF version. No Photoshop required!

If you’ve never attended one of the Live Events at Scrap Orchard then you definitely have to check this out. And if you have attended one in the past, then you won’t want to miss this one!
It’s One Little Bird (me!) vs. Fiddle Dee Dee Designs in an epic scrap off – she’s the reigning champion of elaborate, clustery layouts, and I’m bringing my clean, minimalist and modern perspective to the arena. She chooses the templates, I choose the kit, and then we’ll scrap our pages LIVE, side-by-side, with full audio and video in the Adobe Connect chat room. Join in the fun at 10pm ET/7pm PT on August 1st!

July is almost coming to a close – this summer has been flying by! Our schedule has been jam packed this year which makes it feel as though our lives are stuck on Fast Forward. I suppose it’s fitting that after a couple of years of lazy, leisurely summers we would finally have a busy one.
I’ve added two new products that I’m excited to share today – the Identity digital kit and coordinating Identity Journal Cards are now available in my shop. I found myself preoccupied with all the little things that make us up as individuals – those trademark things that become a part of our personal brand. The kinds of things that make me say “Oh that is so Me…” or “That is totally Tom” and the ever-popular “This reminds me of Nicholas”. I’ve been saying that one a lot this week while I’ve been traveling.
I hope these products inspire you to document both sides of this coin – the quintessential traits that make us the unique individuals that we are, as well as how those things combine, harmoniously, to form the complete picture of the collective us.
