Hoping that everyone had a wonderful Mother’s Day yesterday. My mom and I picked up some Chinese/Vietnamese take-out yesterday to have a mother-daughter lunch at my house, and when we returned home with our food treasures I caught sight of a little something bright and cheerful sitting on my desk in my office.

I’ve been ooooohing and ahhhhhing over the brightly colored pots of Gerbera Daisies we’ve been seeing at the store this Spring, and someone was paying attention. I had a sneaking suspicion that a cheerful little plant on my desk would make my typical workday more enjoyable, and it’s turning out to be true.

Love it when I’m right like that. (But I’m always right. Right?)

JOURNALING | I still totally love this, I think I always will. The sight of you curled up fast asleep, a tiny little person in a sea of bed and blankets even at 10 years old. I love the daily surprise of seeing what interesting position I’m going to find you in – you’re rarely where I’d expect you to be. This never gets old, despite the fact that you insist on getting old, yourself. I treasure these quiet moments where you’re predictably unpredictable, just as you have been since you were a baby. I’m in awe of your ability to fearlessly cover so much square footage while you sleep. I love the way you slowly blink yourself awake, a mischievous smile creeping across your face once you realize I’m standing there wondering how you managed to wind up upside-down or completely sideways in bed again. The silent question between us is always answered with a casual little shrug on your part, and I can’t help but laugh to myself as I turn away and wait for you to prepare for the day. This is one of the many reasons that I haven’t insisted that you start using an alarm clock. This is a moment that I’m still not ready to let go of.

I think that I took Krista Sahlin ( blog | store ) a bit out of her comfort zone on this one – as a matter of fact, I know that I did, because she mentioned it a couple of times. No stranger to color, Krista had never tackled a completely neutral product before, but she wasn’t about to back down from a challenge.

“Being happy doesn’t mean that everything is perfect. It means that you’ve decided to look beyond the imperfections.”

I saw this quote and it resonated with me on both a philosophical and a physical level. I love new, shiny things as much as the next person – new toys, new experiences, new friends. But the time-worn and tattered bits of my life are often where the love lives. It’s what compels me to pull out the old, dented and battered cake pan from my grandmother every time instead of the bright and shiny one I received as a gift a few years ago. Memories live in that old one, and everything just tastes better when it comes out of it.

So whether it’s your child’s favorite old beat-up stuffed animal, a relationship that has withstood the test of time, or an heirloom passed down through your family over the generations – I hope this product inspires you to document the things that you treasure the most – imperfections and all.

The other day I sat down to create these little sentiment flags out of some Hawaiian Koa wood veneer, and I thought it would be fun to wrap them around a staple. It’s sort of a word art + fastener hybrid, simultaneously allowing me to add a little footnote to my photo or journaling block and also adhere it realistically to the page.

Two birds. One stone. (Not that we’re in the habit of stoning birds here at One Little Bird!)

JOURNALING ┊ No one else gets you quite as wound up as she does. You’ve always been the type to desperately fling yourself at another person trying to engage them in some sort of physical battle, and she’s one of the people who is always happy to oblige. I never thought I’d be the “not fun” mom giving lectures on the merits of keeping your hands to yourself. I especially  never thought I’d be giving that lecture to my own mother, the self-professed Queen of Stop Having Fun. I remember entire road trips where Cynnamon and I had to maintain as much distance as possible from one another in the backseat of the car after “angry mom” showed up and informed us that we were having entirely too much fun. I know that deep down she’s reveling in it, soaking up all that payback she hoped would come around one day. Seeing her once-a-total-spaz daughter walk into a room to say things like “Stop. Tackling. Grandma.” I never once tackled my grandma, so this is just fighting dirty. All those years I was just the heir apparent to the Stop Having Fun throne, along with your aunt Cyn. Believe me when I say one day you will be warming this seat, too. And you’ll be just as unhappy about it as we are. For now there’s nothing I can do, my lectures fall on deaf ears to begin with, and whatever you manage to absorb is forgotten the next time she walks through the door and you launch yourself in her general vicinity. Then I reprise my role as the abolisher of all things fun and you two will roll your eyes at me behind my back. Because this is your thing, the thing that the two of you do to rebel against me – against the loud and crazy kid from her past and the rule enforcing mom from your present.

JOURNALING ┊ It’s a beautiful thing when you’re all together, standing side-by-side, the kids that Cynnamon and I made. When Grandma gathered you up for this photo the common thread was unmistakable – each of you unique in your own little ways but for those smiles. Oh, those little smiles that we see every day when you’re happy, when you’re scheming, when you’re humoring us. And there you are gathered around the source of it all, the Alpha smile to this little gathering of Omegas. It’s a sight to behold.
