New52 | Week 24

Eating an entire meal with chopsticks has been on my Bucket List for a while. I married a professional chopstick user – he’s one of those annoying types who can pick up a single grain of rice with his chopsticks – but the majority of my chopstick attempts have resulted in a plethora of soy sauce all over my person.

And it’s a shame because I love sushi, and I know that it’s actually more customary to eat sushi with your hands (I do that at home) but when I’m out a restaurant I look like a REAL goober eating it with a fork.

So I’ve been working on my chopstick skills. I’m still working my way up to my nunchuck skills. (Awkward outdated Napoleon Dynamite reference – I hated that movie, was I the only one?)

I’m happy to report that, in the month of June, Two Thousand Eleven, I was able to make it through an entire night of sushi at my favorite restaurant without using my hands OR a fork. Chopstick skillz, baby!

I couldn’t pick up a single grain of rice to save my life, though. Hopefully it will never come down to that.

About This Project

New52 is a project started by Christine and I that invites participants to live outside the box a little bit more and try things outside their comfort zone. I’m aiming for 52 straight weeks of New, but it’s 100% okay if you decide to participate only once in a while. New52 isn’t about making a life-altering change every week, it’s about keeping an open mind and embracing little changes in your life.

If you participate this week, please leave a link to your blog post, scrapbook page, photograph or other recorded history of your walk on the wild side in the link list below. You can also post images to our Flickr Group! We would love to see what you were inspired to do.

  • I fell asleep during that movie. I was the head bobbing, waking myself up, finally leaning on my husband person at that movie. I didn’t think it was worth the price of admission.

I, too, can pick up a grain of rice with chopsticks. Sorry. I worked for a Chinese man once, and he ate fish on the bone with his. I considered it a challenge to get to his level.

    And now I want sushi…

    • I am, of course, insanely jealous of your mad chopstick skillz. And also of your adorable dog.

  • I can’t even hold a pencil “correctly” (or so my teachers always used to tell me) let alone hold & eat a full meal with chopsticks … kudos my friend!

I can play a mean rendition of Chopsticks on the piano though!!! :-)

no, you were definietly not the only to hate the movie – i’m coming out ot the woodwork to tell you that… ;)

my five year old wants to use chopsticks – i roll up a serviette and put it between the ends of the chopsticks and tie with a rubber band. she’s five – the dismal failure when unassisted is enough to push her over the edge. (and just so you know – i find chinese chopsticks much easier to use – japanese chopsticks just conspire against me.)

    • What a great idea! We have a few “chopstick helpers” in our silverware drawer (“like these on Amazon) except we just nabbed them at a local Noodles & Co. chain one day while eating there. LOL They keep a bin of them on their condiment bar for kids to use and they’re re-usable, so we keep them and take them home.

  • LOL! Congratulations! I think eating sushi with chopsticks makes the experience all the better. Or maybe that’s the champagne? ;)

  • My hubby learned to use chopsticks when we were dating. He felt silly too eating sushi with a fork! hehe!

  • YAY you!!! I only learned (and am still learning) chopsticks from Mark, who yeah, can pick up single grains of rice with his. I actually can, but it results in sprained fingers. I’d like to be so skilled I can pick up a grain of rice while looking through the menu for dessert :P
