On Storytelling

Audrey Neal [ blog | store ] asked me the other day if I would be willing to be a guest blogger on her blog. The subject? Journaling!

I hop at an opportunity like that because journaling has become a passion of mine, due largely in part to my participation on the {we are} storytellers creative team (those new to the hobby won’t know about {wst} because it closed last year). The entire community was built on the premise that we needed to bring the storytelling back to our pages, and it was a lesson I really needed to learn. So much of writing, whether it’s jotting a few notes on your scrapbooking layout, writing a blog post or breaking ground on the next big American novel, relies upon your willingness to simply explore how you feel. In the end it doesn’t really matter what you say as long as it comes from your heart. When you try to “fancy it up” too much or put too much pressure on yourself to be profound or witty, those are the moments where you’ll say to yourself “This is too hard” or “I’m just not a writer”.

If you can tell a story about your day at the dinner table, you can be a writer. If you can get on the phone with a girlfriend and tell her about something your kids just did, you can be a writer.  You just have to stop overthinking it.

So if you get a chance today, stop by Audrey’s Blog and check out my post as well as all of the other information that Audrey routinely provides to guide people along their journey towards becoming a teller of stories. I guarantee that if you take the time to become comfortable journaling on your pages, you will never regret it – and neither will your family.

I’ll be back on Friday to announce my new Creative Team girls AND to post a new contest!

  • While I was here, I also wanted to say that loved your post over at Audrey’s blog. I tried to comment over there when I read it, but it wouldn’t let me. I’ve forgotten exactly what I was going to say, since I’ve slept a lot since then, but the post really resonated with me. :)
