I catch a lot of flack from :: cough :: PEOPLE IN MY LIFE about how I listen to what I describe as “angst-filled folk music”, but I’m okay with that. As I get older I really try to fight the urge to say things like “That’s not even music, that’s just noise!” when listening to the mainstream pop stations, but it seems I lose that fight a little more each year. I mean, I have Sirius, I listen to the current stuff in the car once in a while, but a quick trip through the contents of my Zune will betray me every time. It’s almost all classic rock and angst-filled folk musicians. And, as my friend Julie pointed out, they’re predominantly female singer/songwriters. She was listening to my LastFM station at work one day and she sent me an IM that says “Do you listen to any MEN?” She also claims that after about 10 minutes of listening to what she refers to as “your music” she feels like slitting her wrists. It’s weird how music does that to people, because most of what I listen to cheers me up. For instance, I have never had a day that was bad enough that it couldn’t be cured by blasting Indigo Girls Retrospective at eardrum shattering volumes. Also Ingrid Michaelson’s Be Ok is the album that gets me through about 95% of my workouts at the gym. It takes all kinds. Plus, it’s not all angst-filled. Sure, there’s a hell of a lot of angst, but they also sing … a couple .. upbeat songs. Here and there.
Anyway, one of my favorite female singer/songwriters is Patty Griffin. Specifically her song “When it Don’t Come Easy” is one that I can listen to over and over and never get sick of. So I was really thrilled when I was poking around on YouTube today and ran across this recording of Patty Griffin and Melissa Etheridge singing “When It Don’t Come Easy” together for the “Lifetime’s Women Rock” Breast Cancer Awareness Concert. Because I loves me some Melissa Etheridge, too. I feel like the song sort of falls apart at the end (haha ..) but I thought I’d share it here because it’s my blog, and I can do what I want.
And Julie, you should just skip right on by this post and back away from the knives, k? NOBODY IS FORCING YOU TO WATCH THE VIDEO.

No worries on me watching this clip. I was watching Logan’s Sesame Street A to Z with him last week when Melissa Etherdige started singing a song and I thought to myself “I bet Pepper likes this “crazy” too”. All I had to see was her name and it’s enough to tell me “no thanks”. LOL I did enjoy your post though.
